In 2007, at the age of 49, I had a left total hip replacement, in another Oregon city, due to a congenital issue. For the last several years, I had been in excruciating pain from a loose prosthesis. I saw an orthopedic surgeon who explained that he does not like performing revisions because of the complications it can cause. After trying many natural modalities, bone growth stimulation, nerve decompression surgery, physical therapy, and being on crutches, nothing touched the pain. My left foot turned out, and any weight bearing on the left leg caused severe spasms in my quadriceps. Ibuprofen was my best friend.
In late 2015, I met Dr. Michael Caravelli, at my physical therapists suggestion. After looking at my x-ray, he suggested total hip revision, due to a completely loose prosthesis, which was sinking further and further down into the shaft of my femur. He validated all of the pain I had been through and told me “no one should have to suffer like that”. He was very confident about the surgery and suggested we get it done sooner than later. I loved his confidence and genuine concern.
On February 26, 2016, Dr. Caravelli performed a total hip revision on my left hip. Not only did the old prosthesis slip right out, Dr. Caravelli removed scar tissue that had built up over the years, from the looseness of it. The surgery went on without a hitch. I am now 9 weeks out from surgery, walking with no pain, and gaining strength every day. My legs are the same length. I am back on my bike and preparing to paddle board and hike very soon. It feels as though Dr. Caravelli has given me my life back! I highly recommend this very talented, compassionate, caring orthopedic surgeon.
